Functional Hybrid Training at Amazon Gym
If you've spent any time in a gym over the last few years, you've probably noticed a shift. Alongside the usual rows of machines and free weights, more and more gyms are building out space for a different kind of training altogether — one that blends strength, cardio and full-body conditioning into a single, high-intensity workout. At Amazon Gym, that's exactly what our Functional Hybrid zone is built for.
Functional hybrid training takes the best bits of strength work, endurance training and functional movement, and puts them together in one session. Think sled pushes, rowing, ski erg intervals, kettlebell swings, wall balls and more — all designed to build a body that's not just strong, but genuinely fit: capable of moving well, recovering quickly, and performing under fatigue. It's the same style of training that underpins the growing world of hybrid fitness racing, where competitors are tested across a mix of running and functional stations rather than a single discipline. You don't need to have any interest in competing to get the benefit, though. The training style itself is what makes it so effective, whatever your goal.
Who It Suits
One of the best things about functional hybrid training is how few barriers to entry it has. You don't need years of gym experience, a background in a particular sport, or any specific level of fitness to get started — the format naturally adapts to you. Every station in our functional zone, from the sled track to the ski ergs, can be scaled up or down depending on your ability, so a complete beginner and a seasoned athlete can genuinely train in the same space, at the same time, without either of them being short-changed.
It tends to suit a few types of member particularly well. If you've got a background in one sport and want to build a more rounded level of fitness, hybrid training fills in the gaps that a single discipline often leaves behind. If you're someone who gets bored doing the same routine every week, the sheer variety of equipment and movement patterns keeps things fresh session after session. And if you're training with a specific event in mind — whether that's a hybrid fitness race, an obstacle course event, or simply a personal fitness goal — this is exactly the kind of environment built to prepare you for it.
It's also a great fit if you're newer to fitness altogether. Because so much of the training is built around functional, everyday movement patterns — pushing, pulling, carrying, squatting — it tends to feel more intuitive than some traditional gym equipment, and progress tends to come quickly and visibly.
What A First Session Looks Like
Walking into a new part of the gym for the first time can feel a bit daunting, so here's roughly what to expect if you're trying our Functional Hybrid zone for the first time.
You'll typically start with a short warm-up to get your heart rate up and your joints moving — often a light row, ski erg, or a few minutes on the cross trainer, followed by some basic mobility work. From there, a first session is usually built around introducing you to two or three of the key stations rather than throwing everything at you at once. That might mean a short technique run-through on the sled push, some lighter kettlebell swings to get the movement pattern right, and a few rounds on the rowing machine or ski erg to get a feel for pacing.
Weights and distances are always scaled to where you are, not where you think you should be. Wall balls, for example, range from 2kg right up to 20kg, so there's no pressure to start heavy — the same is true across the kettlebells, sled loading and rope pull. The idea is to build confidence with the movements first, then progress the intensity as you get more comfortable.
Sessions in this style of training tend to be structured around circuits or intervals — a set amount of work followed by a rest period, moving between stations rather than staying on one piece of equipment throughout. It keeps things varied and makes the time go quickly, even when the effort is high. And because the format is so adaptable, you're never locked into a fixed pace; you can work at an intensity that challenges you without leaving you unable to complete the session.
Afterwards, our recovery equipment is right there in the same zone — foam rollers, yoga balls and mats — so you can spend a few minutes stretching out and cooling down before you head off. It's a small detail, but one that reflects how we think about training here: pushing hard is only half the equation, and recovery deserves just as much attention.
Training Locally, Built For Everyone
Based in Shropham and easily reached from Watton, Attleborough and the surrounding Norfolk area, Amazon Gym's Functional Hybrid zone gives local members access to a style of training that's usually only found in specialist studios. Whether you're completely new to this kind of training, returning after time away from the gym, or looking to add variety to an existing routine, our team is always happy to talk you through the equipment and help you build a first session that matches where you're at.
There's no single "right" way to use the space — some members come in for a structured, coached session, others prefer to work through their own circuit at their own pace. Either way, everything you need is set up and ready to go, right in the heart of the gym.
The functional hybrid section is dedicated for training related to functional strength and cardio. This is the perfect location to train for your competitive functional hybrid events.
